Lincoln's Gettysburg Address

Given November 19, 1863 on the battlefield near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, USA

About 2 min of reading1 chapters

Abraham Lincoln delivered this short address on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, four and a half months after the battle fought there. He was not the main speaker, and he spoke for only a few minutes. In about two hundred and seventy words he recalls the founding of the nation on the proposition that all men are created equal, presents the war as a test of whether such a nation can endure, and turns the dedication of the ground into a charge to the living: that the dead shall not have died in vain, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.
