Language of Flowers

About 41 min of reading2 chapters

Language of Flowers, published in 1884, is Kate Greenaway's small illustrated guide to the Victorian code by which flowers carried messages. An alphabetical list gives the meaning attached to each plant, from acacia and acanthus to zinnia, so that a bouquet of bluebells, ivy and red roses could say constancy, fidelity and love without a word being spoken; a reverse list arranges the sentiments, and a short anthology of flower poems closes the book. Greenaway, the most popular children's illustrator of her day, decorated it with her watercolors of children and gardens in the eighteenth-century dress she made fashionable. It is a period piece, and a charming one. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
