Kate Greenaway (1846–1901) was an English illustrator and writer of verse for children, the most popular of her generation. The daughter of a wood engraver, she trained at art schools in London and designed greeting cards and magazine illustrations before Under the Window, her 1879 book of her own rhymes and watercolors printed by Edmund Evans, sold in enormous numbers. Marigold Garden, Mother Goose, the Language of Flowers and a series of annual almanacs followed. Her pictures of solemn children in high-waisted frocks and bonnets started a fashion in children's dress across Europe. A British medal for children's book illustration bears her name.
