Language: An Introduction to the Study of Speech

by Edward Sapir

About 5 h 13 min of reading37 chapters

Edward Sapir published Language in 1921, his only book, written for general readers as well as students. He asks what language is and how it works: its sounds, the grammatical processes by which languages build words, the concepts they express, the ways their structures can be classified, and the slow, directional change he called drift. Later chapters consider how languages influence one another, the relations, or lack of them, between language, race and culture, and the bond between language and literature. Drawing on examples from Native American languages as readily as from Latin or German, Sapir writes clearly and without jargon, and the book remains a founding text of American linguistics. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
