Jurisprudence

by Sir John W. Salmond

About 13 h 19 min of reading273 chapters

John W. Salmond, a New Zealand lawyer and judge, then solicitor-general of New Zealand, first published Jurisprudence in 1902, and it became one of the standard textbooks of legal theory in the English-speaking world. This is the fourth edition of 1913. Salmond defines jurisprudence as the science of the civil law and examines the administration of justice, the sources of law, including legislation, custom and precedent, legal rights, ownership, possession, persons, titles and liability, and the law of property, obligations and procedure. Each chapter ends with a summary. Clear, precise and grounded in English law, the book trained generations of students. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
