Italian Popular Tales
Italian Popular Tales, published in 1885 by Thomas Frederick Crane of Cornell University, was the first large collection of Italian folk stories in English. Crane translated more than a hundred tales from the Sicilian, Tuscan, Venetian and Neapolitan collections of Pitre, Imbriani, Nerucci and others, and arranged them by kind: fairy tales such as The King of Love, Zelinda and the Monster, King Bean and an Italian Cinderella; stories of Oriental origin; legends and ghost stories about Saint Peter, Pilate, Judas and the Wandering Jew; nursery tales; and jests. A long introduction surveys the field, and notes trace each story's parallels in Grimm, Basile, Straparola and the East. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
