She argues that the physical setting of a people, its location, area, boundaries, coasts, rivers, mountains and climate, shapes its history, its movements, its economy and even its character, and she supports the argument with examples drawn from every continent and every period. Chapters treat island peoples, coast dwellers, mountain folk, the steppes and deserts, and the effects of climate.
