How the Other Half Lives
Studies Among the Tenements of New York
How the Other Half Lives, published in 1890, is Jacob Riis's report on the tenements of New York. A Danish immigrant who had been homeless himself before becoming a police reporter, Riis walked the Lower East Side at night with a camera and a magnesium flash and described what he found: airless rooms shared by whole families, sweatshops, stale-beer dives, child laborers, the Italian ragpickers of the Bend, Chinatown, Jewtown, the Black tenements and the lodging houses where boys slept for a nickel. He gives statistics on rents, death rates and crime alongside the portraits, and ends with proposals for model housing and the enforcement of the law. The book shocked its readers, including Theodore Roosevelt, and helped begin the tenement reform movement. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
