History of the Royal Sappers and Miners, Volume 1 (of 2)
From the Formation of the Corps in March 1712 to the date when its designation was changed to that of Royal Engineers
T. W. J. Connolly, quartermaster of the Royal Engineers, wrote the History of the Royal Sappers and Miners to record the services of the British Army's corps of soldier craftsmen from its formation in 1772 until its men were absorbed into the Royal Engineers in 1856. This first volume of the second edition, published in 1857 with colored plates of uniforms, follows the corps year by year from the soldier artificer companies raised at Gibraltar through the great siege of that fortress, campaigns in Holland, the Peninsular War sieges such as Badajoz, the Waterloo period and the following decades of service at home and across the empire, up to 1847. It is detailed, regimental and full of individual names. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
