History of Modern Philosophy
From Nicolas of Cusa to the Present Time
Richard Falckenberg, professor at Erlangen, published his History of Modern Philosophy in German in 1886, and this English version, translated by A. C. Armstrong of Wesleyan University, was intended as a manual between the large histories and the brief compendiums. It runs from the transition out of medieval thought with Nicolas of Cusa and the Renaissance through Descartes and his successors, Spinoza, Leibniz, the English philosophers from Locke to Hume and the French Enlightenment, to Kant and the German idealists, Fichte, Schelling and Hegel, and the philosophy of the nineteenth century up to the author's own day. Each chapter gives a clear account of doctrines with a bibliography. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
