Flatland
A Romance of Many Dimensions
Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, published in 1884 under the pseudonym A Square, is the work of Edwin A. Abbott, a London headmaster and theologian. Its narrator is a square living in a two-dimensional world, where men are polygons ranked by the number of their sides, women are straight lines, and an elaborate social order keeps everyone in their place. In the first part he describes his country; in the second he is visited by a sphere from Spaceland, is lifted out of his plane to see the third dimension, and comes home to preach a gospel no one will believe. The book is both a satire on Victorian class and gender and an introduction to higher dimensions that mathematicians still recommend. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
