Enquire within upon everything
The great Victorian-era domestic standby
Enquire Within upon Everything, first published in 1856 and here in the edition of 1894, was the household reference book of Victorian Britain, selling in the hundreds of thousands. Compiled by Robert Kemp Philp, it offers numbered paragraphs on carving a joint, writing a letter, the etiquette of calls and dinners, removing stains, curing a cold, making a will, choosing a servant, the rules of whist and chess, the language of flowers, how to address a duke and what to do until the doctor comes, with a large index to find it all. Its tone is confident and practical, and its contents are an inventory of the anxieties and aspirations of the middle-class home.
