Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions; Together with Death's Duel

Devotions upon Emergent Occasions, published in 1624, was written by John Donne, then Dean of St. Paul's, during a serious illness that he expected to kill him. He divides the course of the disease into twenty-three stages, from the first alteration through the arrival of the physicians, the sleepless nights and the tolling of a neighbor's funeral bell to the uncertain recovery, and treats each in a meditation, an expostulation with God and a prayer. The seventeenth meditation contains the sentences "No man is an island" and "for whom the bell tolls." The volume also includes Death's Duel, the sermon Donne preached before the king in 1631 a few weeks before his own death, which contemporaries called his own funeral sermon.
