Devil-Worship in France; or, The Question of Lucifer
Devil-Worship in France, or The Question of Lucifer, published by Arthur Edward Waite in 1896, examines the sensational charges then circulating in France that Freemasonry concealed a cult of Lucifer. Waite, himself a student of the occult and later a Mason, goes through the literature of the scare, the works of Léo Taxil, Dr. Bataille, Domenico Margiotta and the supposed revelations of Diana Vaughan, and shows that it was a fabrication built on forged documents and impossible stories. He also discusses the Palladian order, the Satanism of Huysmans's novel Là-bas, and the real history of the French occult revival. Within a year of the book's appearance Taxil publicly admitted the hoax. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
