Daemonologie.
Daemonologie, published in Edinburgh in 1597, is a treatise on witchcraft written by King James VI of Scotland, later James I of England. Cast as a dialogue between the inquiring Philomathes and the learned Epistemon, its three books treat magic and necromancy, witchcraft and the witch's pact with the Devil, and the kinds of spirits that trouble mankind, and it argues, against the skeptics Reginald Scot and Johann Weyer, that witches are real and should be put to death. Appended is Newes from Scotland, a pamphlet account of the North Berwick witch trials of 1590 and 1591, in which the king himself took part. The text is given in its original spelling. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
