Cattle and Their Diseases
Embracing Their History and Breeds, Crossing and Breeding, and Feeding and Management; with the Diseases to Which They Are Subject, and the Remedies Best Adapted to Their Cure
Robert Jennings, a veterinary surgeon who taught at the Veterinary College of Philadelphia, published Cattle and Their Diseases in 1864 as a practical manual for American farmers and dairymen. It opens with the history of the ox and the main breeds of the day, among them the Ayrshire, Jersey, Short-horn, Hereford and Devon, then covers the points of a good cow, breeding and calving, feeding and the growing of fodder. The second part describes the diseases of cattle with their symptoms and the remedies then recommended, and a list of medicines closes the volume. It is a vivid record of farming and veterinary practice in the mid-nineteenth century. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
