Captain Canot; Or, Twenty Years of an African Slaver
Captain Canot, or Twenty Years of an African Slaver, published in 1854, is the life of Theodore Canot, an Italian-born sailor who spent two decades in the slave trade between West Africa, Cuba and Brazil, as written down from his journals and conversations by the Baltimore journalist Brantz Mayer. Canot tells how he was shipwrecked on the coast of Guinea, became clerk to a slave factory, learned the trade with its barracoons, native kings and middlemen, commanded his own ships through storms, mutinies and British cruisers, and finally gave the business up. Mayer presents the book as evidence against the trade, but Canot's own voice is unrepentant and full of the adventure of his career.
