A Theodicy, or, Vindication of the Divine Glory
A Theodicy, or Vindication of the Divine Glory, published in 1854, is Albert Taylor Bledsoe's attempt to answer the oldest objection to belief in God: how evil can exist under a perfectly good and powerful creator. Bledsoe, then professor of mathematics at the University of Mississippi, argues in the first part that moral evil is consistent with the holiness of God because it arises from the free choices of created minds, and he attacks at length the doctrine of necessity defended by Jonathan Edwards and others. The second part argues that natural evil, suffering and pain, is consistent with divine goodness. The book is a careful example of nineteenth-century American philosophical theology.
