Together with the Sense of Antiquity on this Argument

Jeremy Collier, a nonjuring Anglican clergyman, published A Short View of the Immorality, and Profaneness of the English Stage in 1698, and it set off one of the fiercest literary quarrels of the age. In six chapters he accuses contemporary dramatists of immodest language, profanity, ridicule of the clergy and plots in which vicious heroes are rewarded, quoting examples from Dryden, Wycherley, Congreve and others, and examining Vanbrugh's The Relapse and D'Urfey's Don Quixote in detail. He closes with the verdict of pagan antiquity, the Church and the state against the theater. Congreve and Vanbrugh replied, and the stage grew noticeably more decorous.
