A History of Mediaeval Jewish Philosophy

by Isaac Husik

About 13 h 47 min of reading25 chapters

Isaac Husik, a professor of philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania, published A History of Mediaeval Jewish Philosophy in 1916, noting in his preface that nothing of the kind existed in English. In chapters devoted to individual thinkers, he follows Jewish philosophy from Isaac Israeli and Saadia Gaon in the tenth century, through Solomon ibn Gabirol, Bahya ibn Pakuda, Judah Halevi, Abraham ibn Daud and Moses Maimonides, to Levi ben Gerson, Hasdai Crescas and Joseph Albo in the fifteenth. For each he explains how the inherited teachings of the Bible and rabbis were reconciled with, or defended against, the philosophy of Aristotle and the Neoplatonists, in clear and patient prose. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
