A History of Economic Doctrines, first published in French in 1909 by Charles Gide and Charles Rist and translated by R. Richards under the direction of William Smart, traces economic thought from the Physiocrats to the early twentieth century. The founders, Quesnay, Adam Smith, Malthus and Ricardo, are followed by their antagonists, Sismondi, the Saint-Simonians, Owen, Fourier and Friedrich List; then come the liberal school, Marx and the socialists, the German historical school, the marginalists and later developments. Each doctrine is explained in its own terms before being judged. Clear, fair and well organized, the book served for decades as the standard textbook of its subject in France and in English-speaking universities. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
