A General View of Positivism
Or, Summary exposition of the System of Thought and Life
A General View of Positivism, published by Auguste Comte in 1848 and translated by John Henry Bridges, is the founder of positivism's own summary of his system. Comte argues that human thought has passed beyond theology and metaphysics to a positive stage founded on science, and that this new philosophy must reorganize society without God or king. He sets out its intellectual character and social aim, its appeal to the working classes, the moral role he assigns to women, its relation to art, and finally the Religion of Humanity. This edition includes an introduction of 1908 by the English positivist Frederic Harrison. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
