A Color Notation

by A. H. Munsell

A measured color system, based on the three qualities Hue, Value and Chroma

About 1 h 56 min of reading30 chapters

A Color Notation, by the American painter and teacher Albert H. Munsell, first appeared in 1905; this is the revised second edition of 1907. Munsell set out to replace vague color names with a measured system based on three qualities: hue, value and chroma. He explains each one, builds them into a color sphere and solid, shows how any color can be written as a simple notation, and discusses balance and harmony. A second part offers a graded course of study for schools. The Munsell system he describes here is still used in art, industry, soil science and design.
