A Classification and Subject Index for Cataloguing and Arranging the Books and Pamphlets of a Library, published anonymously at Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1876, is the first edition of what became the Dewey Decimal Classification. Melvil Dewey, then a young assistant librarian at Amherst College, explains in his preface how several months of study and visits to more than fifty libraries led him to a scheme that numbers subjects rather than shelves. The book then lays out his ten main classes, from general works and philosophy through theology, sociology, philology, natural science, useful arts, fine arts and literature to history, with their divisions, followed by an alphabetical subject index. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
