About 5 h 24 min of reading2 chapters

1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue is the enlarged edition, retitled Lexicon Balatronicum, of the Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue first compiled by the antiquary Francis Grose in 1785. It records the slang of eighteenth-century London in thousands of entries: the cant of thieves and beggars, the jargon of sailors, soldiers and university men, the terms of the gaming table, the tavern and the brothel, nicknames for coins, drinks and parts of the body, and a great many insults. Grose collected much of it on night walks through the low quarters of the city. The dictionary is a primary source for historians of English and a disreputable pleasure for everyone else. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
