The Complaint, or Night Thoughts on Life, Death and Immortality, published in nine parts between 1742 and 1745, made Edward Young one of the most widely read poets of the eighteenth century. In long meditations in blank verse, written after a series of bereavements, the poet addresses a worldly young man named Lorenzo and reflects through the night on time, death, friendship, the vanity of earthly life and the Christian hope of immortality. Its gloomy grandeur and moral fervor influenced the graveyard poets and the Romantics across Europe, and William Blake illustrated it. This edition opens with an essay on the life and poetic genius of Young, setting him in the history of English poetry.
