White Fang
White Fang is born in the northern Canadian wild, three parts wolf, the only cub of his litter to survive a famine. He is taken in by an Indian camp, learns to fight every dog in it, is sold to a brute who sets him in the pit against other animals, and is finally rescued by a mining engineer who undertakes the slow work of teaching a savage animal to trust. Jack London published the novel in 1906 as a companion piece to The Call of the Wild, running the earlier book's movement in reverse, from wilderness to civilization. It is longer and more argumentative than its predecessor, with London's ideas about environment and heredity close to the surface. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
