The Sea-Wolf
The Sea-Wolf, published in 1904, is Jack London's novel of brutality and ideas at sea. Humphrey Van Weyden, a literary gentleman of San Francisco, is fished out of the bay after a ferry collision by the sealing schooner Ghost and pressed into service as cabin boy by her captain, Wolf Larsen. Larsen is a self-taught giant who reads Browning and Spencer between beatings, believes that life is a yeast that devours itself, and takes pleasure in testing the soft Van Weyden against his philosophy. The voyage into the Bering Sea, the mutinies, the arrival of the poet Maud Brewster and the final struggle on a desolate island carry the argument between the two men to its end.
