The Iron Heel, published in 1908, is Jack London's novel of a future in which the United States falls under the rule of a capitalist Oligarchy. It takes the form of a manuscript by Avis Everhard, discovered and annotated seven centuries later by a scholar living in a socialist commonwealth, whose footnotes correct and comment on her story. Avis, a professor's daughter, is converted to the cause by Ernest Everhard, a working-class intellectual, and follows him through strikes, the destruction of the labor movement, underground struggle and the crushing of the Chicago Commune. The book ends abruptly, as the manuscript does. It is one of the earliest modern dystopias. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
