Lost Face
Lost Face, published in 1910, gathers seven of Jack London's stories of the Far North. The title story follows Subienkow, a Polish exile and fur thief captured by the native people of Alaska after a massacre, who must find a way to escape death by torture. The collection also includes To Build a Fire, London's classic story of a man and a dog on a trail at seventy-five degrees below zero, as well as Trust, That Spot, about a sled dog no one can get rid of, Flush of Gold, The Passing of Marcus O'Brien and The Wit of Porportuk. The stories are spare and unsparing, about cold, greed, cunning and the thin margin between survival and death. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
