What is Property? An Inquiry into the Principle of Right and of Government

What Is Property?, published in 1840, is the book in which Pierre-Joseph Proudhon answered his own question with the phrase that made him notorious: property is theft. In the first memoir he examines the usual justifications of property, natural right, first occupation, civil law and labor, and argues that each, followed to its end, leads not to property but to equality, before demonstrating that property in his sense, the right to draw income from what others produce, is impossible. He closes by calling himself an anarchist, among the first to adopt the word. This edition adds the second memoir, a letter to the economist Blanqui, and an account of Proudhon's life. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
