Harry Hardinge, a young officer in the Welsh Fusiliers, is in love with Winifred Lloyd of Craigaderyn Court but cannot be sure she returns it. Before the question is settled his regiment sails for the Crimea, and the second half of the novel follows him through the siege lines before Sebastopol, the night attack at Inkerman, the storming of the Redan and a spell as a prisoner among Russians at Yalta, where another woman complicates matters. James Grant, a prolific Scottish writer of military romances, published the book in 1873 and drew on regimental histories for the fighting.
