Jane Seton is a Scottish historical romance by James Grant, set at the court of James V in the Edinburgh of the 1530s and 1540s. The heroine, a young woman of the great house of Seton, is caught between a lover who serves the king and a powerful enemy who holds the office of King's Advocate and uses the law and the courts as weapons. Grant fills the book with the detail he loved: the Canongate and Holyrood, tournaments, feuds, the Church on the eve of the Reformation, and the king himself moving among his people in disguise. Grant wrote more than fifty such novels and knew Scottish history well, and this one, from 1853, is among his most popular.
