James Grant (1822–1887) was a Scottish novelist born in Edinburgh who served briefly as an army officer before turning to fiction with The Romance of War in 1845, a tale of the Peninsular campaign. He went on to write more than fifty novels, most of them military and historical romances set in Scotland or in the wars of the British Empire, including Under the Red Dragon and One of the Six Hundred, both set in the Crimea, as well as popular histories such as Old and New Edinburgh. He helped found the National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights and became a Roman Catholic late in life.
