One of the Six Hundred: A Novel
On the last day of 1853 Lieutenant Newton Norcliff of a lancer regiment at Maidstone learns that his corps is to be held ready for foreign service in the spring, and takes leave to settle his private affairs in the north before the East claims him. His story, told in the first person with his servant Willie Pitblado at his side, runs through a courtship at home, the voyage out and the Crimean campaign to the charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava and its aftermath. James Grant, who wrote more than fifty military romances, published the novel in 1875 with Tennyson's line as his epigraph. It pairs naturally with his Under the Red Dragon, set in the same war. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
