Troilus and Criseyde

About 4 h 30 min of reading5 chapters

Troilus and Criseyde is Geoffrey Chaucer's long poem of love and loss in the besieged city of Troy, written in the 1380s in the seven-line stanza he made his own. Troilus, a son of Priam, falls in love with the widow Criseyde, and her uncle Pandarus manages their affair with a mixture of cunning and comedy until the lovers are united. Then Criseyde is handed over to the Greek camp in an exchange of prisoners, promises to return within ten days, and does not. Chaucer took the story from Boccaccio but deepened every character, above all Criseyde, whose betrayal he refuses to condemn outright. The poem is written in Middle English.
