Chaucer's Works, Volume 2 — Boethius and Troilus
This second volume of Walter W. Skeat's edition of Chaucer's complete works, published at Oxford, contains two closely related texts. Boece is Chaucer's prose translation of The Consolation of Philosophy by Boethius, the sixth-century dialogue between a condemned statesman and Lady Philosophy on fortune, evil and free will, which Chaucer read and quoted all his life. Troilus and Criseyde, his longest finished poem, retells the love of the Trojan prince Troilus for the widow Criseyde, arranged by her uncle Pandarus and ended by her transfer to the Greek camp and her faithlessness there. Skeat supplies introductions on the date and sources of each work, a critical text in Middle English spelling, textual notes and a full glossary. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
