This third volume of Walter W. Skeat's Oxford edition of Chaucer contains three works and an account of the sources of the Canterbury Tales. The House of Fame is an unfinished dream poem in which the poet is carried by a talkative eagle to the palace of Fame and the whirling house of Rumor. The Legend of Good Women, with its prologue on the daisy and the god of Love, retells the stories of Cleopatra, Thisbe, Dido, Hypsipyle and Medea, Lucretia, Ariadne, Philomela, Phyllis and Hypermnestra. The Treatise on the Astrolabe is Chaucer's prose manual on the instrument, written for his ten-year-old son, with diagrams. Skeat's introductions, textual notes and glossary accompany each work. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
