This is the first volume of Walter W. Skeat's edition of Chaucer, prepared from the manuscripts for the Clarendon Press and here given in the second edition of 1899. It opens with Skeat's general introduction and a life of the poet, then prints the Middle English Romaunt of the Rose, the translation of the French allegory of which only the first part is likely to be Chaucer's own, followed by the minor poems: the Book of the Duchess, the Complaint of Mars, the Parliament of Fowls, Anelida and Arcite, and shorter pieces such as Truth, Gentilesse and the lines to Rosemounde. Skeat's notes, glossary and arguments about authenticity made this edition the foundation of modern Chaucer scholarship.
