Toilers of the sea
Victor Hugo wrote Toilers of the Sea during his exile in the Channel Islands and published it in 1866, dedicating it to Guernsey. Gilliatt, a solitary fisherman whom the islanders distrust, loves Déruchette, niece of the shipowner Mess Lethierry. When Lethierry's steamer, the Durande, is wrecked on the Douvres rocks and he promises his niece to whoever can save its engine, Gilliatt goes out alone to attempt it, and the heart of the novel is his long struggle against storm, tide, hunger and the creatures of the reef. Hugo surrounds the story with digressions on Guernsey life, superstition and the sea. This is W. Moy Thomas's translation as completed for Everyman's Library, with an introduction by Ernest Rhys. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
