Poems
Poems by Victor Hugo is an anthology of English translations published in 1888, prefaced by a memoir of the poet. It draws on nearly every one of Hugo's verse collections in order: the early Odes and Ballades, the Oriental fantasies of Les Orientales including The Djinns and Mazeppa, the domestic poems of Les Feuilles d'automne, Les Chants du crépuscule and Les Voix intérieures, the political fury of Les Châtiments against Napoleon III, the elegies of Les Contemplations, the heroic narratives of La Légende des siècles, the war poems of L'Année terrible and the grandfatherly verses of L'Art d'être grand-père. The translations are by various hands, and together they give the range of Hugo's sixty years of verse. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
