Notre-Dame de Paris

by Victor Hugo

Translated by Isabel F. HapgoodAbout 12 h 18 min of reading72 chapters

Paris, 1482. Quasimodo, the deaf hunchbacked bell ringer of Notre-Dame, is raised by the archdeacon Claude Frollo, whose repressed desire for the Gypsy dancer Esmeralda drives the plot toward a public hanging and a last scene in the vaults of Montfaucon. Around them Victor Hugo builds the whole medieval city, with long chapters on the cathedral, on the view from its towers and on the printing press that he says will kill architecture. First published in 1831, the novel helped start the campaign to restore Notre-Dame itself. This edition presents the complete text in Isabel F. Hapgood's translation, which keeps the original title rather than the English habit of naming the book after the hunchback. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
