Ninety-Three, published in 1874 and translated by Aline Delano, is Victor Hugo's last novel, set during the Royalist uprising in the Vendée in 1793, the year of the Terror. The aged Marquis de Lantenac lands in Brittany to lead the peasant revolt, and the republican forces sent against him are commanded by his own great-nephew Gauvain, a generous young officer, under the watch of Cimourdain, a former priest and inflexible revolutionary who was Gauvain's tutor. Between them stand a peasant mother and her three children. Hugo stages the clash of loyalty, mercy and revolutionary justice on an epic scale.
