Thomas Davis was the leading spirit of the Young Ireland movement and a founder of the Dublin newspaper The Nation, and he died in 1845 at the age of thirty. This selection, edited by T. W. Rolleston for the Library of Irish Literature, opens with his historical defense of the Irish Parliament of James II, followed by essays from The Nation on Irish history and antiquities, the national language, the peasantry, scenery, music and ballad poetry, self-education and the reconciliation of Orange and Green. The volume closes with his poems, among them A Nation Once Again, The West's Asleep and Fontenoy, which were sung in Ireland for generations.
