The Yellow Fairy Book

by Andrew Lang

About 7 h 25 min of reading37 chapters

The Yellow Fairy Book, published in 1894, is the fourth of Andrew Lang's colored fairy books, after the Blue, Red and Green. In a teasing preface Lang answers a complaint from the president of the Folk-Lore Society about printing so many fairy tales with pictures. The collection draws widely: Grimm's The Six Swans and The Iron Stove, Andersen's The Emperor's New Clothes, The Dragon of the North from Estonia, The Glass Mountain from Poland, The Flying Ship and The Story of King Frost from Russia, tales from Bukovina, Greece and Hungary, and stories from the Iroquois and other Native American peoples. The retellings, largely by Lang's wife and friends, are clear and lively. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
