The Blue Fairy Book
The Blue Fairy Book, published in 1889, was the first of the twelve colored fairy books that Andrew Lang edited over the next twenty years, and it did more than any other work to keep the old tales alive for English-speaking children. Lang chose thirty-seven stories from the Grimms, Perrault, Madame d'Aulnoy, the Arabian Nights, Asbjørnsen's Norwegian collection, and English chapbooks, among them Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, Rumpelstiltskin, Aladdin, Jack the Giant-killer, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, and a retelling of Gulliver's voyage to Lilliput. The translations, mostly by Lang's wife and her friends, are clear and unsentimental, and Lang's preference for the oldest versions shows throughout. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first story free.
