The Homeric Hymns

A New Prose Translation; and Essays, Literary and Mythological

About 2 h 41 min of reading44 chapters

The Homeric Hymns, in Andrew Lang's prose translation of 1899, are the ancient Greek hymns to the gods long attributed to Homer. The long hymns tell of Apollo's birth on Delos and his founding of the oracle at Delphi, the infant Hermes stealing his brother's cattle and inventing the lyre, Aphrodite's love for the shepherd Anchises, and Demeter's search for her daughter Persephone, carried off to the underworld. Shorter hymns greet Dionysus, Ares, Artemis, Athena, Pan, Hephaestus, Poseidon, Earth, the Sun and the Moon. Lang adds essays on the hymns' origins, religion and mythology. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
