The Arabian Nights Entertainments, published in 1898, is Andrew Lang's selection and retelling of the tales for children, prepared from the eighteenth-century French of Antoine Galland and illustrated by H. J. Ford. Framed by the story of Scheherazade, who saves her life by leaving each night's tale unfinished, the volume includes the Merchant and the Genius, the Three Calenders, the Seven Voyages of Sindbad the Sailor, the Little Hunchback, Prince Camaralzaman and the Princess Badoura, Noureddin and the Fair Persian, Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp, the Enchanted Horse and the Two Sisters Who Were Jealous of Their Younger Sister. Lang's preface explains how he shortened and softened the stories, and his version has been many readers' first meeting with the Nights. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
