Piers Plowman is the great alliterative poem of fourteenth-century England, a sequence of dream visions in which the narrator, Will, falls asleep on the Malvern Hills and sees a field full of folk between a tower of Truth and a dungeon of Falsehood. Through Lady Holy Church, Lady Meed, the Seven Deadly Sins and the plowman Piers, the poem searches for Do-Well, Do-Better and Do-Best and ends with the coming of Antichrist. Thomas Wright's edition, first published in 1842 and here reprinted in its revised form of 1887, prints the Middle English text from a Trinity College manuscript; this first volume contains the Vision itself, with the editor's historical introduction. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
