The Trail of the Hawk, published in 1915, is the second novel of Sinclair Lewis, written before Main Street brought him fame. Carl Ericson, a Norwegian-American boy from the small town of Joralemon, Minnesota, drifts through college, odd jobs and wandering across the country before he finds his vocation in the new sport of aviation, becoming a touring flyer known as Hawk Ericson in the years when airplanes were a fairground wonder. The second half of the book follows him to New York, his courtship of Ruth Winslow, the difficulty of settling into marriage and business, and his restlessness for the open road. Lewis's eye for American manners and speech is already at work. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
